When Were The First Veneers Created?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Initially, veneers were created in the 1920s so that Hollywood celebrities had perfectly straight, bright white teeth for the cameras. A California dentist, Dr. Charles Pincus, developed them in 1928 as part of an actor\u2019s costume for a film shoot. These initially were made from acrylic and were attached with a somewhat removable adhesive so that they could be taken off at the end of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Did Veneers Grow in Popularity?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

During the 1930s and 1940s dentists began to realize that veneers could be helpful for people who existed outside the realms of the rich and famous. With growing popularity, however, it became clear that new materials were needed to make prosthetics that looked natural and would last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1937, porcelain veneers were invented that aesthetically matched natural teeth so they weren\u2019t as noticeable. While this was a vast improvement, there still wasn\u2019t a permanent adhesive so veneers remained a temporary solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Were Veneers Permanently Attached?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Eventually, in the late 1950s Dr. Michael Buonocore introduced the concept of etching, which is often still used today. In this novel process, acid is applied lightly to the surface of the tooth to create deeper pits and grooves. This allows for stronger bonding to take place between the veneers and the surface of the teeth. As a result, they stay in place longer and require fewer replacements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, in 1982, the Simonsen and Calamia research group discovered a new technique! They learned that etching with hydrofluoric acid and then bonding with a composite resin material could essentially permanently attach veneers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Veneers Today<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

New developments led to the incredibly durable veneers used by dentists today. They are made from composite material and dental porcelain that\u2019s built to last. These advances increased their lifespan so now they can last up to 20 years (or more) with the right care and maintenance!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not only that, but they are now so widely available that many dentists offer onsite services to have them placed. That means it\u2019s likely that you can visit the same professional for veneers as you do for regular dental checkups and cleaning services. Furthermore, many dentists have payment plans so that cost doesn\u2019t keep you from getting the treatment you want or need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
