If you have dental crowns, bridges, or veneers, you may assume that your days of straightening your teeth are behind you. After all, these restorations are designed to improve the appearance and function of your smile. But what if you’d also like to improve the alignment of your teeth?
The good news is that having dental restorations doesn’t automatically mean you can’t use clear aligners. However, treatment can be a little more complicated when some of your teeth have been restored. Your dentist or orthodontic provider will need to evaluate your individual smile before determining whether clear aligners are appropriate.
Can I Get Clear Aligners With Dental Crowns?
A dental crown covers an entire tooth above the gumline. Because clear aligners move teeth by applying gentle, controlled pressure, having a crown doesn’t necessarily prevent the tooth from being moved.
However, the material and shape of the crown can affect how an aligner fits and grips the tooth. Your provider may need to take your restoration into account when creating your treatment plan.
It’s also important to consider the condition and age of the crown. If a crown is damaged, loose, or otherwise needs attention, addressing that issue may be recommended before beginning clear aligner treatment.
What About Bridges?
Bridges require a little more consideration. Unlike an individual crown, a traditional dental bridge connects multiple teeth through a restoration that replaces one or more missing teeth.
Because the teeth supporting a bridge are connected to the artificial tooth or teeth, they can’t necessarily be moved in the same way as individual natural teeth. This can limit how much your provider can change the position of those teeth using clear aligners.
That doesn’t mean clear aligners are automatically off the table. Your provider can evaluate your bridge, the surrounding teeth, and your overall bite to determine whether there is a safe and predictable way to achieve your goals.
In some cases, your treatment plan may focus on moving other teeth rather than trying to reposition the teeth supporting the bridge.
Can I Straighten Teeth With Veneers?
Veneers are thin restorations bonded to the front surfaces of teeth. They can dramatically change the appearance of a smile, but they don’t necessarily prevent those teeth from being moved.
As with crowns, your provider will need to consider how the veneer affects the tooth’s surface and how well the clear aligner can fit around it. Attachments, which are small tooth-colored shapes sometimes used during clear aligner treatment, may also require special consideration when restorations are present.
If your veneers are older or have other concerns, your provider may recommend evaluating them before beginning orthodontic treatment.
Why Is an Evaluation So Important?
Clear aligner treatment is highly customized, and existing dental work makes that customization even more important. Your dentist will look at your restorations, the alignment of your teeth, your bite, and the health of your gums and underlying teeth.
They’ll also consider what you want to accomplish. If your goal is a straighter smile, there may be ways to plan treatment around your existing restorations. However, if you want significant changes to the appearance of teeth with veneers or crowns, a combination of orthodontic and restorative treatment may sometimes be more appropriate.
What Happens to Your Restorations After Treatment?
Your existing restorations generally remain in place during clear aligner treatment unless your dental provider determines that they need to be replaced or modified.
Keep in mind that moving your natural teeth can change their positions relative to one another. If you’re planning to replace crowns, veneers, or other restorations in the future, your provider may recommend completing orthodontic treatment first. This can help ensure that new restorations are designed around your final tooth positions.
Are Clear Aligners Right for You?
Having crowns, bridges, or veneers doesn’t necessarily mean you have to give up on the idea of clear aligners. It simply means your treatment needs to be planned carefully.
A thorough evaluation can help determine which teeth can safely be moved, how your existing restorations will affect treatment, and whether clear aligners can realistically achieve the results you’re hoping for.
Your smile doesn’t have to fit into a one-size-fits-all treatment plan. With the right approach, your existing dental work and your orthodontic goals can sometimes work together.
