How It Works: The Sedation Dentistry Process

Initial consultation

To begin the sedation dentistry process, Dr. Shefat Rabbi will need to discuss your overall health, as well as any past or current conditions you have, medications you’re taking, and other details. This is done to ensure that you can be safely sedated with your preferred method of dental sedation.

Nitrous oxide sedation

To get nitrous oxide sedation, you’ll put on a comfortable nose mask, then breathe in a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. It should take effect immediately and wear off after about 5 minutes once the mask is removed.

Oral conscious sedation

Depending on the drugs used, you may need to take a pill the night before your appointment, 30-60 minutes beforehand, or both. Oral conscious sedation will make you feel very tired and groggy. You will need someone to drive you both to and from our dental office, since you will not be able to drive home on your own.

Comfortable, anxiety-free dental treatment

Once the sedative takes effect, Dr. Shefat Rabbi will begin your treatment. We offer sedation for most of the procedures at our dental office. If you have severe dental anxiety, we can even offer sedation for things like preventive visits and teeth cleanings.

Sedation Dentistry Options

Nitrous Oxide Sedation (Laughing Gas)

Laughing gas is usually the best method of sedation for people who have mild to moderate dental anxiety. In this method of sedation, a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen is pumped through a nose mask into your lungs.

Then, you’ll feel euphoric (happy) and less nervous, and a bit disconnected from the things that are happening around you. You may even find the situation to be funny, hence the term “laughing gas.” Your anxiety will be reduced, and your pain tolerance will be much higher, too.

After treatment, oxygen will be pumped through the mask to flush out any remaining laughing gas. You’ll be back to normal after about 5 minutes, and you can even drive yourself home or go back to work or school.

Oral Conscious Sedation

This method of sedation is deeper and more intense, and is better for people with more severe anxiety, or who are getting complex dental procedures. You’ll take a powerful anti-anxiety pill, which will leave you feeling relaxed, groggy, and sleepy.

In fact, it’s quite common for patients to fall asleep and not remember most of their treatment. You can still be woken up and respond to commands, but it’s likely that you won’t remember much of what happened.

However, unlike nitrous oxide sedation, the after-effects last up to 4-6 hours or longer. You cannot drive home, and you should not go back to work or resume other day-to-day activities. Take the rest of the day off to rest and relax.

Sedation Dentistry FAQs

What is sedation used for in dentistry?

Primarily, sedation is used to treat dental anxiety. Dental anxiety is a very common issue and can often prevent patients from getting the dental care they need. If you are anxious or nervous about coming to the dentist in Edison, sedation dentistry can help you feel safer and more comfortable.

Additionally, sedation helps with pain and discomfort during more invasive procedures, such as tooth extractions and dental implant placement. It also helps you feel more comfortable if you require multiple dental procedures and need to sit still for several hours during treatment.

Am I a good candidate for sedation dentistry?

Going to your Edison dentist early and regularly helps your child become more familiar with the process of regular dental visits, making them less likely to be anxious about going to the dentist as they grow up. Seeing the same dentist regularly throughout your child’s early years will also allow the doctor to become more familiar with your child’s teeth. They’ll be able to identify any potential oral development issues early and take the proper action to ensure their teeth stay strong and healthy. These regular appointments also encourage children to build better life-long oral health habits.

What does sedation dentistry feel like?

This depends on the method of sedation you choose. With laughing gas, you will feel light-headed, giggly, and relaxed, but you will be fully conscious and aware of your surroundings. You will also feel less discomfort during treatment.

Oral conscious sedation will usually make you feel groggy and “out of it”. You will likely fall asleep, and probably won’t remember much about your procedure. However, you will not be unconscious, and you can still be woken and respond to commands.

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Yes. All methods of sedation dentistry are provided by qualified professionals at our dental office and have minimal side effects. While deeper methods of sedation like oral conscious sedation have more prolonged side effects compared to laughing gas, but are still very safe, and they have no serious risks to your health or well-being if you are a good candidate for sedation.
