How Does Dental Insurance Work?

Dental insurance isn’t as clear-cut as many patients expect it to be, and we understand how frustrating this can be. In short, you pay a monthly fee through your employer or directly to the insurance company in order to receive benefits. These plans typically renew every year on January 1st, and any unused benefits will not role over. When your plan restarts, your deductible will also reset, requiring you to pay a set out-of-pocket expense determined by your dental insurance company before your benefits kick-in.
Your dental insurance plan will also have an annual maximum, which is the capped off amount that your insurance company will pay for your treatments throughout the year. Any amount that exceeds the maximum will need to be paid out-of-pocket.
What Does Dental Insurance Cover?

Dental insurance operates based on a 100-80-50 coverage structure, where your benefits are largely concentrated on covering preventive services like tooth-colored fillings, checkups and cleanings, etc. Most dental insurance plans will cover 100 percent of the cost of two checkups and cleanings spaced six months apart, as well as routine X-rays. They also cover around 80 percent of the cost of minor services like fillings, and 50 percent of more extensive treatments like dentures and root canals.
In-Network vs. Out-of-Network

If our office is in-network with your dental insurance plan, it means that we’ve signed a contract with the company to offer discounted rates and fees to those patients. If we’re out-of-network with your PPO plan, don’t worry, you can still come see us! Our team will file insurance claims on your behalf, and in many cases, your out-of-pocket costs aren’t any higher than if you were in-network!
